45 Anti-Food Waste Initiatives

From Community-Supporting Fridges to Food Waste Fruit Juices:

As consumers become increasingly concerned about environmental issues, there has been a significant rise in anti-food waste initiatives. With ideas ranging from community fridges storing restaurant leftovers to juices made from leftover fruit, these projects demonstrate some of the creative ways consumers can reduce the amount of food thrown out each year.

Some of the most common anti-food waste initiatives are those that seek to redistribute excess food. This can mean everything from donating the leftovers from restaurants and coffee shops, to smaller-scale initiatives that allow consumers to share their excess food with others in the community. There are even projects that aim to help farmers sell their excess produce directly to consumers instead of throwing it away.

On the other hand, there are a number of companies that are helping reduce food waste by turning these scraps into brand-new products. For instance, the UK-based food retailer Pod is selling a line of fruit juices made from ugly produce that would otherwise be tossed. Taking a slightly different approach, the grocery chain Waitrose is turning leftover peas and pulses into a form of packaging for its gluten-free pasta.
