The British grocery retailer Aldi is looking to offer consumers a more sustainable beer option under The Hop Foundry brand.
In an effort to reduce food waste, Aldi has begun taking wasted bread and ‘wonky’ fruit to create two new beers. Launched under The Hop Foundry brand, the new beers include the Toast Brewing Another Round Session IPA and the Freedom Brewing Misfits Summer Fruits Beer. The former has a citrusy flavor profile and has been made from 4,000 loaves of Aldi’s leftover tiger bread. As Louisa Ziane, co-founder at Toast Brewing, explains, "By using Aldi’s surplus bakery bread, we’re saving a whopping three tonnes from going to waste."
On the other hand, the Freedom Brewing Misfits Summer Fruits Beer is made with nearly a tonne of strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries that would have otherwise gone to waste.
