Cars have long been known as automobiles or autos — perhaps for longer than they've even been known as cars — but the April 2018 auto trends show that the term is taking on new meaning. The rise of autonomous vehicles has been reported on for years, and despite recent events shaking public confidence in their reliability, self-driving cars are too efficient and convenient to be held back for long.

AI can be applied to many different areas of the road. Vehicles themselves can be made autonomous, of course. That's been theorized, albeit not yet put into practice, in vehicles as diverse as taxis, school buses, and even hoverboards. But AI can also be applied to the methods through which traditional vehicles operate, as with taxi dispatch units being controlled by computers rather than people.
