Top 100 Unique Trends of 2014

From Decapitated Doll Shoes to 3D-Printed Fingernails:

It's hard to find rhyme or reason within the top 2014 unique trends because they're all over the map. One thing that remains constant across each wacky creation and bizarre concept is a desire to surprise consumers with the unexpected.

Unique trends are unique because they often do the opposite of what's familiar or coveted within mainstream culture. Conventional standards of beauty and attractiveness are routinely discarded in favor of the "ugly" or the "repulsive." For example, Klara Pernicova designed barrettes that take on the form of severed body parts, like cleaved-off ears. In another subversion of the beauty paradigm, footwear designer Jeffrey Campbell created a translucent platform shoe filled with the decapitated heads of Barbie dolls. A real-world example is found with the ungroomed armpit selfies that took off in China earlier this year, a trend which later expanded to include dying your own armpit hair.
