From Twisted Renaissance Portraits to Mona Lisa Graffiti
Laura McQuarrie — November 26, 2013 — Pop Culture
These Neo-Renaissance creations express the second rebirth of classical paintings and styles. But since these creations were made in modern times, many of these Renaissance-inspired pieces are infused with technology and references from pop culture today.
A perfect example of this is Botticelli's 'Birth of Venus,' which has been recreated countless times, now replacing the goddess Venus herself with celebrities like Beyonce, Lady Gaga and other outrageous characters like cats and Santa Claus.
Another popular painting that has been reinterpreted a million different ways includes the Mona Lisa, which has been remade in tons of different materials, as well as remixed to make Mona more relatable to the youths of today. Svetlana Petrova's creations are a prime example of this, which adds cats to the arms of figures from classical paintings.
