The Santa Elena student residence is a bioclimatic dorm that provides young students in Peru safe housing. For children living in the rural areas of Peru's central jungle, a walk to and from school might amount to a five-hour commute through rough terrain. To mitigate any dangers, the school created makeshift dormitories to provide children with a place to sleep.
The community-built structure lacked some safety and hygiene aspects. Semillas, a nonprofit organization, based in Lima, designed a bioclimatic student residence expansion to the existing building. The Santa Elena residence boasts a minimalist design defined by OSB wood panels. It keeps students as comfortable as possible amidst the changing seasons and weather conditions due to its cross ventilation and modular elements.
