From Carbon-Reduced Office Buildings to Foldable Cabin Houses
Colin Smith — April 12, 2022 — Eco
This list of April 2022 architecture trends reflects not only that there is an increased pressure to make new architectural installations more sustainable, but also that there is a large value placed on unique experiences delivered through architecture. These experiences include audio refraction off of walls, audio-visual events, and artistic depictions on architecture.
The 'Biosphere' from Studio BIG, a Danish architectural firm, is one of the most unique hotel room designs this month. The hotel room is suspended from a tall tree in a forest in Sweden and is accessible from a drawbridge. This room is part of the 'Treehotel' venture in Sweden that seeks to connect guests with nature on a higher level. The Biosphere achieves this by being surrounded entirely by a sphere of birdhouses. These birdhouses are visible from inside the hotel room as each of its walls contains a large portion of glass to view the birds. The serene experience delivered by the Biosphere is undoubtedly unique.
On the sustainability side, Hollaway Studios designed a carbon-neutral factory from 'Brompton,' a bicycle manufacturer. This factory will be placed in an unused wetland surrounded by nature. The surrounding area will become a wildlife reserve. The building will produce as many as 200,000 bikes annually while being certified carbon-neutral. This new commitment to carbon neutrality from Brompton is one of many environmental commitments from countless businesses this month.
