Bohemian Summer Homes

This Summer Home Treads Between Embracing Luxury and Nature

In what could only be described as a nature house, this residence plays with the idea of conventional luxury and elements of a minimalistic, anti-materialistic lifestyle.

Herbst Architect designed a very modest summer home that overlooks the Whangarei Heads on the North Island of New Zealand. The 'Castle Rock House' is a less than conventional summer home. As the designers explain, "this building is a continuation of our exploration in a genre of building that is specifically designed for occupation in the summer months."

This house feels very much like a statement or to a lesser degree an experiment to challenge the relationship of a home immersed in nature. The designers want to challenge the utility and comfort of the home, playing with the very ideals of the holiday home and its relationship with materiality and limit the amenities that could be accessible.
