The Adel Design Research (ADR) Laboratory at the University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning has been experimenting with robot-built structures. The result is an intricate pavilion, constructed from small 2x4 pieces of timber. Students and researchers at the laboratory formulated custom algorithms to decide on the optimal arrangement of the small timber structure. Once the "robots assembled the components into a series of prefabricated frames," the pieces were "slotted together by hand" on-site.
Officially named the Robotically Fabricated Structure, the piece is currently located in the Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor. The robot-built structure can be utilized in various ways, including acting as "a place of rest and shelter," as well as a site for exhibitions and for hosting performances. It presents a great example of low-carbon construction.
