A historic community center in Glasgow, Scotland was saved from demolition by activists and revamped by locally based architecture studio New Practice. Known as the Kinning Park Complex, the building housed a school in the 20th century before closing down and making way for the community center.
The structure was in a poor state when New Practice received the brief. Hence, the project involved substantial renovations and included a face-lift, as well. During the renovation, New Practice focused on increasing accessibility to the different facilities of the historic community center in Glasgow. They also kept sustainability top of mind by adopting "a reuse and recycle strategy" during the innovation. The studio also relied on a color-blocking technique to "animate" the interior of the structure and create a more cheerful atmosphere for communities to enjoy.
