With ad ratings company Nielsen recently announcing that it will track campaign performance on the app, it's clear the medium is here to stay in the world of marketing.
Before Snapchat had developed an official advertising division, brands like Mountain Dew and Call of Duty took to the mobile app with covert campaigns run through branded accounts. Since then, Snapchat has evolved to offer such sponsored content as location-specific filters, interactive lenses and the opportunity to run ads in the Discovery Story section.
Notable innovations that has thus far emerged include an age-gated tool that helps alcohol brands reach consumers of age, as well geofences that allow brands to limit access to geofilters to those presently inside a retail location.
