Knowing that conscious consumers want to know exactly where their food comes from, French supermarket chain Carrefour is leveraging blockchain technology to bring transparency to its private-label chicken product line.
With Carrefour Quality Line Auvergne, consumers will be able to use a QR code on product packaging to find out everything they need to know about all points in the supply chain. The transparency-focused initiative will share where a chicken was bred, butchered, processed and more, all powered by a secure, non-centralized database—or blockchain—so that the information cannot be tampered or hidden.
Over the year, the supermarket chain also aims to make it possible for the public to track eight other products with this honesty-focused model: free-range eggs, pesticide-free tomatoes, Norwegian salmon, beef, cow's milk, cheese, citrus fruits and seasonal honey.
