Los Angeles is now home to the United States' first-ever vegan food bank, a location devoted to creating food security and making sure that Southern Californians have access to healthier food options. The Vegans of Los Angeles Food Bank was brought to life by Gwenna Hunter, the first Black woman to initiate a vegan and plant-based food bank in the country.
At this first-of-its-kind food bank, visitors can pick up in-season local farm fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other staples of a plant-based diet like nuts, grains and beans. With donations from All Vegetarian Inc., Califia Farms, Chobani, Omni Foods and more, the vegan food bank helps people Build-A-Bag to support their families with nutrient-dense options.
"Between the physical food bank and a vegan food outreach program we sponsor at the historic West Presbyterian church in LA, we serve over 600 people in a single day within a three-hour period once per month," says Hunter, "The need and desire for plant-based nutrition is tremendous!"
