'Poppers: Photographic Portraits' is a collection of photos by Ruth Bayer of people getting high on poppers (also known as amyl nitrate). Bayer notes poppers create a visual effect that makes people look sexy and heightens their sensual awareness.
Inspired by nights clubbing in San Francisco, the project started out by simply photographing her friends. Not too long after, Ruth Bayer was steadily drawing in a string of volunteers in chemically altered states that make up her latest book.
Implications - Ruth Bayer is analytical about her subjects. "Most have a twinkle in the eye -- it seems like there's an unspoken invitation from the sitter to share the experience, or at least convey it to the viewer."
Bayer's excellent captures of that shared experience makes her a photographer to watch in my eyes. Expect to see more from her in the near future.
