'Central Lechera Asturiana,' the Spain-based milk manufacturer and distributor, has launched a new set of plant-based milk packaging solutions paired with a commitment to be carbon-neutral by 2035. Central Lechera Asturiana's new packaging replaces unsustainable plastics in both the cap and the protective barrier around the cardboard carton with a more sustainable sugarcane-based plastic. Additionally, there is a thin layer of aluminum used in the plastic layer to ensure the preservation of the milk.
The crops that Central Lechera Asturiana use for both its cardboard and its sugarcane are C02-reducing and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. With this shift to sustainable packaging, it is estimated that the carbon footprint will be reduced by 20% company-wide from manufacturing to distributing.
The next step for achieving carbon neutrality across all of its product bases is to create a solution for the 30% of its products that are not packaged in cardboard cartons. These products are sold in plastic jugs and bottles, so Central Lechera Asturiana is actively looking into plastic alternatives, such as sugarcane, to replace these unsustainable products and become the first carbon-neutral milk distributor in Spain.
