The Facebook Reality Labs are Developing 3D Maps for AR Glasses

Facebook Reality Labs is currently creating LiveMaps, which will be 3D maps of the entire world. The 3D map will be used for Facebook's AR glasses, which are currently also in development. The AR glasses will use the 3D maps instead of the environment surrounding the user.
Facebook Reality Labs has stated that its mapping is integral to the AR glasses and the company stated that it was, "the core infrastructure that will underpin tomorrow's AR experiences." The maps are created using machine vision, localization as well as crowd-sourced mapping. In order to produce the maps, Facebook will use data from over 2.4 billion users.
Facebook's AR glasses are still going through research and development, and no release date has been scheduled.
