While self-driving cars and other autonomous vehicles have caused much excitement and intrigue, the fact of the matter is that widespread adoption of these futuristic technologies will not be possible or indeed wise if sufficient supportive infrastructure isn't set up, which is precisely what NVIDIA is looking to contribute to with the introduction of a new mapping platform that aims to increase the accuracy and safety associate with the movements of self-driving vehicles.
The 'Drive Map' platform is designed to be leveraged by autonomous vehicular systems, and is built around technology obtained by NVIDIA as a result of its takeover of the DeepMap startup. The end result is a platform that can develop a digitized map of roads across North America, Europe and Asia with details such as road marks, traffic lights and other objects.
With a stated goal of covering half a million kilometers of roads around the world by 2024, it's apparent that this mapping platform could make a vital contribution toward adoption of autonomous vehicles.
