An upcoming Dutch building in the city of Utrecht is set to bear a unique design that involves cylindrical cogs distributed around its sides, the result of an innovative vision set up by none other than Heatherwick Studio as part of a collaborative effort with Barcode Architects.
The 'Oopen' building's unique design, which comprises cogs coming together in an unusual manner, is said to be representative of the diversity of people, communities, cultures and perspectives that are brought together in the city of Utrecht. "The design is as a system of different parts and programs, cogs working intrinsically together, whose outcome is unpredictable but always more than the sum of its parts," noted Caro van de Venne, partner and co-founder of Barcode Architects.
It is hoped that 'Oopen' will become the first Dutch building of high-rise status to boast net zero mixed-use certification.
