Civic Architects and VDNVP join forces to work on a range of workspaces specifically for the University of Twente located in Enschede, the Netherlands. The two celebrate the natural imperfections of the building that was originally built in the 70s and retain the concrete frame of what was once the chemistry laboratory. The new building is meant to be a sustainable symbol for the school with bright interior themes that surround courtyard gardens.
Civic Architects' Founding Partner Jan Lebbink explains the design approach to Dezeen, stating, "The original building was designed for machinery and, due to its low ceilings and significant depth (40 metres), was very, very dark – it proved difficult to repurpose. Our approach involved a shift in programming: rather than forcing the existing structure to conform, we tailored the building's organization to suit it."
