A view of the CASIS Headquarters by Ryan Connolly from 1st Avenue and 40th Street in Manhattan strikes you as a mass of rigid and vaguely rectangular forms; however, the dynamic cladding of the structure has a sculptural and an artistic quality, establishing a unique relationship that references the interior.
Horizontal floor planes house exhibition spaces that engage the public with the galactic displays that the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space has to offer. Moving between and across levels from one end of the edifice to another is, however, made possible by sinewy strands of seemingly flexible material. Facilitating the circulation throughout the CASIS Headquarters, these abstract ramps look to have been inspired by organic forms, yet appear as alien to human eyes as life on another planet.
