The new BMW wireless charging system hopes to provide the simplest solution to charging cars in the electric vehicle revolution. The system is set to release in July 2018 and will be available for BMW 530e owners in Europe, with a small batch of chargers being available in California. The system can currently charge a vehicle 3.5 hours, which is about 15 percent longer than plugging it in. This may seem like a downgrade in performance but the appeal of the BMW wireless charging system lies more in its convenience rather than its performance. The ability to simply drive over a charger reduces a lot of stress for electric car owners and makes refilling the battery incredibly easy.
Unlike wireless mobile phone chargers, which rely on Qi charging, this BMW wireless charging system uses integrated coils. A primary coil found the charging pad, can be installed in almost any environment. The secondary coil found on the underside of the vehicle works magnetically with the base charger to produce a charge rate of 3.2kW.
