Volvo has partnered up with the electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions company 'Momentum Dynamics' to test a set of wireless EV charging pads in Sweden. The collaborative effort involves the use of Volvo 'XC40 Recharge' electric SUVs, and the implementation of Momentum Dynamics' proprietary wireless charging pads. These pads will be placed at two popular taxi ranks, locations where taxis wait for customers, in Gothenburg, Sweden.
This test will last for three years, and each vehicle is expected to drive 62,000 miles per year, which totals around 186,000 miles. This is a sufficiently large test pilot to determine the efficacy of wireless charging pads for EVs, at least for the taxi industry. Momentum Dynamics' charging pads deliver a charging rate of 41kW, provided that the vehicle is properly situated on top of the pad. To ensure the precision parking of the vehicles, Volvo equipped its EVs with external cameras.
