Alkemie is a line of environmentally responsible jewelry for women and men made completely from recycled metals. The line is handmade in Los Angeles and is heavy on gold tones with a raw, rustic aesthetic. The necklaces, bracelets, rings and belt buckles they design incorporate natural themes like feathers, thorns, acorns, snakes and owls.
"Alkemie is a design collaboration between husband and wife Ashley Lowengrub and Dara Gerson," the website explains. "They began to pioneer one of the most environmentally and socially responsible lines of jewelry because of their love of nature and their hope in a better future for their children."
The line uses local materials and prioritizes the use of ethical practices like fair trade. Even the leather they use comes from sustainable cattle farmers. Ashley and Dara designed their practices in a sustainable way in order to offset some of the damages created by others in the industry, such as child labour and the devastation of toxic chemicals on the natural environment.
They have also incorporated philanthropy into their business, giving a portion of each sale toward a charity of the month. This month that organization is the Seva Foundation, which Alkemie is giving 5% of their retail sales.
