In a society where stigma is associated with mental disorders, these mental illness initiatives make a point of educating individuals out of ignorance and into understanding. Although, many may think that the stigma associated with mental illness is a fixture of the past, it still percolates through society today.
By providing individuals with knowledge regarding mental health and mental illnesses, they can begin to understand that mental illness is not a choice or cry for attention, but an affliction and disease. Like most diseases, mental illness has treatments, but there is no definitive cure. Right now, all society can do is accept individuals as they are and work towards a future that doesn't judge, but aims to understand.
In order to progress in the future, society must talk about these issues and these mental illness initiatives mark the beginning of that conversation.
