From Intergalactic Cosmetics Collections to Celebrity-Branded Lipsticks
Katherine Pendrill — May 15, 2016 — Fashion
From Star Trek-themed cosmetics to celebrity-branded lipsticks, the May 2016 makeup trends reveal that pop culture remains a popular source of beauty inspiration. Not only are brands capitalizing on current content, but they are also borrowing from the past to create unexpected, nostalgia-inducing collections.
One of the brands best known for borrowing from pop culture is MAC Cosmetics. For instance, the brand recently announced the release of a cosmetics collection inspired by the upcoming Star Trek film. The brand has also looked to older sources of inspiration with a makeup line honoring the late singer Selena Quintanilla, as well as a collection based around the popular Troll Doll toys of the 90s.
Instead of simply borrowing from pop culture, many cosmetics companies are teaming up with celebrities themselves for one-of-a-kind collections. For example, Katy Perry teamed up with COVERGIRL to launch a line of lipsticks, MAC Cosmetics partnered with Brooke Candy for a second collection and Rihanna is set to collaborate with LVMH on a new beauty collection. On the other hand, some celebrities have found success in starting their own beauty brands, as is the case with Kylie Jenner.
