Local Japanese architecture and design studio Kengo Kuma and Associates has been enlisted by traditional Taiwanese pineapple cake manufacturer SunnyHills in creating a space that reflects the careful preparation behind the trademark cakes. The result is an elaborate criss cross latticework made from slats of timber that form the exterior. Located in Tokyo, the three-storey structure was inspired by a well-crafted bamboo basket with over 5,000 meters of timber strips that surround the facade and the ceiling.
"Our aim was to create a forest in the busy city centre. We studied how lighting states would change in a day in the woods, and came up with a shape like a basket," says Kuma. Kuma resists the use of glue or nails for creating wood joints and places the slats at a 30 and 60 degree angle.
