YouTube spoofvertising is sweeping the web, delighting millenials with its pop culture satire videos that tackle serious issues in a cheeky way. Trend Hunter Editor Jamie Munro has chosen her top five favorite YouTube parodies, which span from feminist makeup tutorials to George Lucas-hating music videos.
Jamie’s favorite YouTube spoofvertisement is a clip from the Toronto-based television show, This Hour Has 22 Minutes. The clip depicts Toronto’s infamous mayor, Rob Ford, dressed as none other than Honey Boo Boo, the six year-old redneck beauty queen, and star of TLC’s Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. "Robbie Boo Boo" lounges around while wearing a tiara and a tutu, poking fun at the fact that even a six-year-old pageant princess could be just as good a mayor as Ford.
A second hilarious video is a feminist makeup tutorial. This tongue-in-cheek video shows feminists how to apply an even amount of foundation, "giving equal representation to all, unlike the government or primetime television." The tutorial guide also tells women to draw their eyeliner wings, "so sharp, they could kill a man, so that you can drink his blood and offer it to the goddess, Athena."
These awesome videos have already transformed YouTube from a casual vlogging locale to a platform for social change and commentary. As for the future, perhaps more and more comedians will take to the web to offer their opinions, changing people’s minds one view at a time.
