Architecture firm MVRDV has completed the construction of new social housing development in Bordeaux, France. The vibrant Ilot Queyries apartment complex features 282 units - 128 of which are designated to social housing. The complex features commercial spaces, a rooftop restaurant, and a large communal green space.
Ilot Queyries is located near the River Garonne and sits across the UNESCO World Heritage Historical Center. The design embraces the principles of intimacy, surprise, and liveliness. The buildings all feature asymmetrically sloped roofs which provide increased ventilation and natural light into the units. Each building is arranged around a central courtyard - which provides a private outdoor space for all residents. The facades facing the courtyard are lower than those facing the street, which creates an intimate and safe feel.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the architecture firm grew a new appreciation for outdoor space and made sure to include a large courtyard to offer the residents a park-like refuge.
