The Courtyard Residence is an inviting and minimalist building by FRG Architects. Located in Melbourne, the home has been described as "a rectangular origami of concrete and glass."
FRG Architects strategically selected the materials to build on the pared-back aesthetic the studio had in mind. The Courtyard Residence features "matte and polished concrete" that contribute a "monumental energy" and muted surfaces that boasts a feeling of "sophisticated rawness." The windows are made with sturdy steel and minimal use of timbers is featured throughout the building. These decisions build on the minimalist presence of the Melbourne dwelling. The studio also focused on striking the perfect balance between a sense of privacy from the outside and openness. It achieves this with a welcoming Mediterranean-style central courtyard—from which the home derives its name.
