Coop Himmelb(l)au Embraces Deconstructionist Architecture

Deconstructionist architecture falls under contemporary structural expressions and it was developed to oppose the order and clean-cut lines of modernism. As such, the movement emphasizes unexpected architectural interventions that may even appeal to surrealism and the avant-garde. Coop Himmelb(l)au is an Austrian practice that designed a rooftop extension that falls under the deconstructionist architecture movement.

Located in Vienna, the rooftop extension for law firm Schuppich, Sporn, Winischhofer's office adds another 90 square meters of meeting rooms, several small offices, and a reception area. The rooftop, however, also captures the attention of passersby because of its unconventional form. Coop Himmelb(l)au used glass and steel to create the angular extension which certainly has a dramatic presence. The project, as well as the studio, got a fair amount of publicity because it was a moment of proof that "thee radical schemes could actually be built."
