Japan's Coeda House is a beautiful cafe built to be earthquake-resistant. Designed by the architecture studio Kengo Kuma & Associates, Coeda House is a picturesque coffee shop overlooking the natural beauty of the Pacific Ocean. The simplistic design features a mix of wood and glass, both of which were chosen to best adapt the space to the natural landscape. This amazing structure is located in the Shizuoka prefecture, which also plays host to the breathtaking Mt. Fuji.
Coeda House's most impressive and gorgeous design feature comes in the form of the support structure for the building. In the center of the open pavilion there stands a stack of cedar boards that support the roof. These boards were stacked randomly and reinforced with a carbon fiber rod. The result is something truly elegant, but also incredibly supportive and allows the building to be earthquake-resistant. The supportive cedar centerpiece prevents the need for perimeter support columns and therefore gives an unobstructed view of the natural landscape.
