Public transit riders are accustomed to waiting around bus stops on a daily basis -- an experience that would be much improved by the instalment of Bench Houses nearby. Designer Arseny Leonovich won a 2014 Red Dot Design Award for this collection of quirky bus shelters that playfully reference the coziness of home.
In addition to a warm wooden seating surface, Leonovich has put together a sturdy structure of tubular metal to serve as an open enclosure. A sculptural treatment to this material has produced different variations that suggest the outlines of detached, semi-detached and row houses. Coated in brightly colored paint, the Bench Houses are accented with little streetlights, pendant lamps and clocks on posts. The odd backrest further contributes to the comfort of the user.
