Google's new Virtual Vermeer Museum is a new artistic use of AR that brings the paintings of the famous artist into the homes of average people. Created in partnership with some of the world's most famous museums, including the Mauritshuis, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Rijksmuseum, and the Louvre. In total, 18 museums and various private collectors contributed to the Virtual Vermeer Museum to contribute high-resolution images of the Vermeers in their collection.
This isn't the first use of AR for artistic purposes, but Google's Virtual Vermeer Museum is one of the first to compile a collection this extensive. The elegant blend of AR and art simultaneously creates a unique experience for all art fans but also allows anyone to enter highfalutin museum culture.
