A Toyota Solar Roof is Undergoing Testing

A new iteration of the Toyota solar roof is being tested on public roads. The trials will look to make improvements in solar technology so that drivers can charge the EV battery while driving. This would greatly extend the range of Toyota electric cars.
The current demo car has the ability to convert solar power at 34% and higher. This is a much-improved process, where previous commercial panels were only able to convert at a rate of 22.5%. The new panels will provide an additional 27.7 miles of range on to the vehicle.
A version of the Toyota solar roof was previously available in Japan for the Prius PHV, where the auto manufacturer partnered with Shar and Japan-based National Research Organization, NEDO.
