A Chiang Mai-based architecture firm Sher Maker has erected an off-grid timber cabin in Thailand. Sher Maker has completed the Wood and Mountain cabin together with a group of local builders and artisans.
The Wood and Mountain cabin is a relatively open-concept design that speaks to the surrounding vegetation. It is a space where off-grid travelers and explorers can embrace the isolated and middle-of-nowhere atmosphere. Sher Maker's aesthetics are simple, functional, and traditional. The designers embraced local design traditions and favored regional artisans to construct the structure. The exterior consists of simple cladding built with locally sourced wood.
The designers embraced the Japnese Shou-Sugi Ban technique of burning wood, which helps blend the structure into the natural landscape. Charring pre-existing wood also helped reinforce the cabin's resistance to extreme weather conditions. The structure is serene and simple and offers travelers a refuge from life's chaos.
