More single-use plastic is entering landfills each year, and in an effort to reduce the number of disposable cups being used in quick-serve restaurants, Vessel -- a reusable cup provider -- has partnered with the Ecology Center to launch a reusable cup service pilot in Berkeley, California. The new initiative aims to reduce the 41 million disposable cups that are thrown out annually in the city.
The circular economy solution allows consumers to check-out one of its stainless steel cups with their beverage purchase and return it afterward to one of its many Vessel kiosks or another participating location. The reusable cups are then collected and sanitized, ready to be redistributed.
The Ecology Center is currently seeking more funding to expand the reusable cup service pilot to other cities.
