As consumers become more aware of the dangers of single-use plastic, specifically straws, on wildlife, Starbucks Canada is leading the way in creating more sustainable alternatives with its new 'Greener' to-go cup. The new eco-friendly cup will be piloted in Vancouver to test for recyclability and composability in the area.
In addition, starting today, a recyclable, strawless lid will be the new standard for iced beverages in Starbucks stores throughout Canada as part of the company’s efforts to phase out plastic straws worldwide. The lids are customized for specific beverages, for example, a slightly wider, tear-drop shaped opening for Nitro beverages and a recyclable domed lid for Frappuccino® blended beverages.
“We know how important this issue is to Canadians,” says Michael Conway, Executive Vice President and President, Starbucks Canada. “and we’re committed to being a part of the solution. I’m excited and proud that our customers in Vancouver will be among the first to sip coffee from a greener to-go cup.”
