Designer Adam Nathaniel Furman has employed their signature whimsical style to create a colorful queer monument for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The playful structure was titled 'Babs Baldachino,' to celebrate LGBTQ+ people in the English city and "provide moments of pleasure." The sculpture was introduced as part of the contemporary arts fest Fierce Festival.
The whimsically colorful design of the queer monument invites visitors to sit on its stepped base. The piece "forms part of the festival's Healing Garden of Babs series." The word 'bab' is a local term for affection. The artistic director of Fierce Festival created the Healing Gardens of Bab program to acknowledge the town's "homophobic colonial histories" and "subtly pique people's interest who might not know anything about these histories."
