Microsoft introduced Project xCloud as a global game-streaming technology that will give gamers the freedom to play games on the device of their choosing—such as a console, a PC or an on-the-go mobile device. Although there are plenty of games that are tethered to specific platforms, Microsoft is aiming to give gamers more freedom in the way they want to play—in the same way that music and movies are offered on-demand via streaming services today.
In 2019, Microsoft will be starting public trials of Project xCloud so that existing and future Xbox games can be experienced in this new format. As some gaming systems require controllers, buttons and keys, Microsoft plans to introduce "a new, game-specific touch input overlay that provides maximum response in a minimal footprint for players who choose to play without a controller."
