'Nadine' is a social robot, developed by a group of scientists and researchers at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, that was created not just to amuse and astound but to play the role of either a personal assistant or a social companion.
This particular robot was designed to be a veritable lookalike of her creator, professor Nadia Thalmann -- although it does look just a little stiffer while remaining incredibly human-like.
Social robots could prove to be important in healthcare situations, where they could be used to assist the elderly or infirmed with basic physical tasks, or as social companions for the lonely. Nadine the social robot is clearly a big achievement, and it will be interesting to see this creation transition from an academic project to a private product offering, with many companies already showing interest.
