Chocolate manufacturer Meiji launched a new product line that swaps sugar for fructooligosaccharides (FOS)—which has been proven to increase the number of bacteria in the gut that are good for health. Created to appeal to health-conscious consumers who are after snacks for specific nutritional benefits, these chocolates leverage FOS as an alternative sweetener that's low in calories. As the company said in a statement, "[FOS] is a carbohydrate that has a taste similar to sugar, but is not absorbed [by the body] as sugar."
Thanks to the chocolate's gut-healthy ingredients, the new line has been registered with the Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan as foods with Function Claims, and launched in outlets as of mid-July.
