Jane Birkin’s Original Iconic Birkin Bag Makes Its French Debut

The iconic Birkin bag, originally sketched by the late Jane Birkin herself, is now on display in France for the first time as part of the “Excellence à la Française” exhibit at Sotheby’s new Parisian headquarters. Running through October 31, the showcase celebrates the epitome of French craftsmanship and luxury, with Hermès’ Birkin bag taking center stage as a symbol of timeless artistry.

The history of this world-renowned accessory dates back to a chance encounter between Birkin and Hermès executive Jean-Louis Dumas. On a flight in 1984, Birkin’s need for a practical yet stylish bag led to her sketching the now-famous design on an airplane sick bag. Dumas refined her vision, merging it with Hermès’ rich equestrian heritage to create a black calfskin prototype, which Birkin eventually donated for AIDS research.

The exhibition of Jane Birkin’s original Birkin is pivotal for fashion history and cultural awareness. Sotheby’s is highlighting the transformative impact of the Birkin bag on the fashion industry, as well as the cultural narrative that has elevated it from a practical accessory to a symbol of opulence and status.
