The Hot Wheels AR App is Bringing Modern Tech to Classic Kids' Toys

Mattel is taking a cue from Lego with the release of its new Hot Wheels AR app. The company plans to launch an AR app in the fall of 2018 with users being able to point a phone or tablet at Hot Wheels boxes and be able to instantly see a virtual version of the set. The main objective of this app is to give consumers a chance to preview playsets without having to open anything up and without retailers wasting precious floorspace on demo units.
The Hot Wheels AR app was first displayed at New York City's Toy Fair and was demoed at the Hot Wheels booth. The augmented reality technology made an impressive first appearance with detailed tracking features and the ability to capture most of the playset.
Hot Wheels is furthering its AR experience with the launch of its Augmoto AR racing platform. Unlike the AR app, this platform will give users the chance to race digital cars projected on an AR track. The Augmoto AR racing set is still currently in development, but is expected to release between September or December 2018.
