It seems that 3D mapping is all the rage, as Google Earth 3D will be offering 3D maps on devices running the Android platform. The announcement comes months after Apple's own hints towards offering a similar service exclusively for iOS devices. In a bid to end their dependency on Google's map services, Apple began to develop their own mapping solutions, and has acquired three 3D mapping companies since 2009.
While Apple has yet to provide a time-frame for their release, Google has announced that it plans to roll out their new mapping service by the end of this year, promising to offer 3D maps of metropolitan areas with a combined population of 300 million people.
