As news of a Banksy arrest hit the Internet yesterday, so too did one of his latest works, Girl with a Pierced Eardrum. Although the British street artist's arrest was a hoax and he is not in fact Liverpool-born Paul Homer, this work of art is completely legitimate. Inspired by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s famous Girl with a Pearl Earring, the graffiti piece makes on crucial change.
In place of the classic pearl earring is an outdoor ADT security alarm. Thus, the Girl with a Pierced Eardrum can be construed in a number of different ways. Of course, such interpretations are left up to the viewer.
