Local architecture company Studio North creates the Garden Garage, which is a custom garden and garage detailed with Corten steel planters and a dynamic green roof. This home is located in the Upper Mount Royal neighborhood in Calgary, Alberta. The project came to fruition to address the challenge of having both a functional parking lot and recreational yard space.
The aforementioned Corten steel planters are applied as miniature versions of the garage's planted roof sloping towards the garden. The team at Studio North explains the design to Dezeen, stating that "The project is about the collision of the backyard plane and the driveway plane, which creates a condition that is part landscape and part garage, part natural and part manmade. The sequence of space and material from lower to upper seeks to create a transitional threshold from the surrounding urban context to an immersive otherly landscape that offers an escape from the city."
