Following similar programs in other cities around the world, the New York subway is offering commuters free wifi and eBook access. In partnership with Penguin Random House and the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), bar communications company Transit Wireless is celebrating 175 underground stations with Internet connectivity. The Subway Reads promotion is offering subway riders free access to 175 short stories and chapter samples from a variety of authors. In addition to free reading material, readers also have the opportunity to win one of three Amazon Kindle Fire tablets.
Scientific research suggests a shorter commute leads to greater happiness. A more productive ride to work combined to free wifi, which is also becoming an essential element of everyday life, will hopefully make a difference in the lives of New Yorkers.
