This compact apartment in Paris maximizes the homeowner's available space, transforming the unit from cramped to spacious. A series of changes were necessary to achieve this space -- the most important being a series of knocked down walls. Once this was done, a multipurpose wall was inserted that now serves a variety of needs. The large wall functions as a stair, an office, a display, a closet and a fabric storage shelf.
The location of the wall also allows for more natural light to flow into the space. The compact apartment's ingenious wall now features one side of sloped stairs which pays homage to the surrounding hills and climbing culture of Montmartre. Modern furnishings are also contrasted with exposed beams which give the space more character. The use of white walls with splashes of bright color on the floors and walls helps to brighten the space.
