Common Seas is an organization that attempts to show that we're all really sea creatures. Some of the current projects in its overall platform include inshore fishing and conservation, ocean literacy, vertical gardening and climate change. One particularly interesting project is Plastiki, the first closed-loop design sailing boat in the world that is possible to sail on the ocean. The way to see if the design is up to the test? Sail it for three months, the team says.
Common Seas was founded by Jo Royle. "The ocean has taught me about beauty, mystery, freedom and that fine line between respect and fear," she said. "More than anything I think years at sea has shown me the need to respond to Mother Nature immediately through learning from past experiences, believing in your intuition and making creative use of the resources you have available." It really does seem as if Common Seas offers a creative approach to considering the collective risks and opportunities of environmental change.
