Turenscape Creates the Breathing Sea Wall in Haikou City
Amy Duong — October 31, 2024 — Art & Design
Chinese landscape design studio Turenscape has created a Breathing Sea Wall, which is a design project that alters a concrete sea wall on an abandoned fish farm. It now functions as a public space in Haikou City, Hainan with the goal of alleviating the local threat of rising sea levels. It also provides a community feeling with its outdoor space as an area for locals to enjoy.
Founder of the firm, Kongjian Yu shares with Dezeen, "The project was inspired by the need to address the environmental damage caused by the existing concrete sea wall, which exacerbated soil salinisation and amplified erosive force. The aim was to transform the area into a resilient public space that would adapt to rising sea levels and restore the local ecosystem."
